Turner gets AP Honor Roll Recognition

(Beloit, WI) By Hillary Gavan, Beloit Daily News

The School District of Beloit Turner is the only district in the Stateline Area to be named to the College Board’s 4th Annual AP District Honor Roll.

A total of 477 school districts in the United States and Canada earned recognition this year. The AP District Honor Roll recognizes efforts to open AP classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of students, while maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher, according to F.J. Turner High School Principal Ryan Bertelsen.

Improvement is measured using 2011, 2012, and 2013 data, and inclusion on the list is based on the increase in participation and access to AP by at least 6 percent and the maintaining or improvement of performance levels when comparing the percentage of exams scoring 3-plus in 2011 to 2013.

“Even with the increase in students taking the test, we saw an increase in performance as well. To me that’s the most important part,” Bertelsen said. “If we were only focused on performance the easiest thing would be to limit who you allow to take AP classes, but from our standpoint we take as many students as possible and work with them to make sure they can still be successful.”

For example in 2011, Bertelsen said Turner High School had 34 students complete 46 exams compared to 70 students completing 118 exams administered in 2013. During this same time frame the percentage of exams with scores of 3 or higher increased by 5.8 percent.

Bertelsen said students benefit from obtaining college credit at no cost in addition to being more successful for going through the rigor of AP classes.

“Our students value the importance of AP courses and continue to show yearly improvement on our AP exams. Not only are we seeing a higher percentage of students taking AP classes we are seeing a higher percentage of students taking multiple AP classes as well,” Bertelsen said. “The concept of opening AP classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of students is a direct reflection of our AP Teacher’s philosophy. Through our student’s hard work and dedication of our staff, Turner High School has created a strong AP program that offers a wide variety of AP courses that continues to grow over the past five years.”

Turner High School students have completed AP exams in the following courses: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Psychology, AP Statistics, AP U.S. History and starting in the 2013-2014 school year AP Government.
